The Challenge:

Rugs Direct faced a combination of technical and content-related challenges common to large eCommerce retailers: 

  • Duplicate PDPs: Multiple SKUs being crawled and indexed created wasted crawl budget and diluted authority.
  • Crawl Budget & Hierarchy: Google wasn’t surfacing the most valuable category pages. Faceted navigation logic prevented indexation of high-demand search patterns (e.g., blue 8×10 wool rugs). 
  • Thin Content Sitewide: Product descriptions were pulled directly from manufacturers, leaving pages without unique value.
  • Lack of Authority: Minimal internal linking limited the site’s ability to pass authority between key categories.
  • Missed Content Opportunities: No robust content hub to capture informational and long-tail search demand.

The result was declining traffic, poor keyword visibility, and limited ability to compete in a crowded online rug market.

Our Solution:

After a technical audit and roadmap were completed, JCT Growth launched a multi-pronged SEO strategy.

  1. Architecture & Crawl Optimization: We designed a scalable category architecture that allowed Rugs Direct to surface granular categories to Google. Through an IT partnership, we adjusted the crawl logic, ensuring high-value pages were prioritized for indexation.
  2. Canonicalization & Duplicate Control: Experts implemented canonical tags across multiple SKUs to consolidate authority and prevent duplicate content issues.
  3. Content Overhaul: We rewrote thousands of product descriptions to replace manufacturer content with original, conversion-focused copy that highlighted product details customers actually searched for. Additionally, we expanded on-page category content to target primary and long-tail keywords, and launched a content marketing platform with guides, how-tos, and educational resources, driving over 1M visitors annually.
  4. Internal Linking & Authority Building: Built custom internal linking widgets to surface relevant categories across PDPs and other categories. This and additional efforts helped improve contextual linking between content marketing assets and transactional pages, building topical authority across the site.
  5. Review Consolidation: Lastly, we created unified product reviews so they appeared on primary product pages indexed by Google, strengthening page uniqueness and improving conversion.
